Energy Savings and Energy Independence

We put some efforts into electricity savings over the years, but not in any organized fashion. There appears to be some relation to how much our furnace blower runs and our overall electricity usage, with more KWh usage in the winter months. We are currently seeing a reduction in KWh/month. Kill-a-Watt! We got one of these little devices for ~$20. If your going to cut electricity use you should get one of these.

Electricity Use (annual, current year to the last bill)

Year KWh used $/KWh lbs CO2 released KWh/mo
2001-02 8603 .07 18004 782
2002-03 7294 .08 15264 607
2003-04 7701 .09 16116 641
2004-05 8877 .09 18577 739
2005-06 8055 .10 16857 671
2006-07 6635 .10 13885 552
2007-08 1858 .11 3888 309

Current energy savings: 55%. (KWh/mo versus average KWh/mo for 2001-2006)

The CO2 factor for Excel Energy in Colorado is currently 1.92 lbs/KWh. With transmission line loss of 9% the factor is 2.09 lbs/KWh. Excel offers a "wind source" option, at more cost per KWh. I refuse to pay Excel extra for wind power just to have them invest it in more coal burning power plants. Now if they would earmark wind source money to buy and produce more renewable energy...
