We run a couple of computers. In the past we had 17" CRT monitors and 2 UPS units. This past year I sprung for some new 19" wide screen LCD displays and put everything on surge protectors with one kill switch.
Probable Energy Use
Computer Center | Watts | hr/day | KWh/yr | $/yr | lbs CO2 | Price |
Old, stand by | 54 | 24 | 473 | $42 | 989 | $0 |
Old, active | 401 | 2.5 | 365 | $32 | 765 | $0 |
New, active | 333 | 2.5 | 303 | $27 | 635 | $440 |
Savings: 63% Amazing. Leaving stuff on stand by was using more power than actually using the computers. No more getting up in the middle of the night to stop the UPS beeping after a power outtage and we turn everything off when done with a one switch, the lazy way.
A 19" LCD display uses just 34 Watts.
A single master switch for all computer equipment. Saving $42 a year.
